[2024]How to dress over 40, 50 & overweight? *Tip 9 is wild!*

If you are overweight and struggling to look your best over 40 and 50s, ladies, let me assure you, you are definitely not alone!

As the sayings go “Women are like red wine, they get better with age.” I can’t agree with that more.

In our 40s and 50s, we are not trying hard about youthful beauty anymore.

Instead, timeless elegance is the value sophisticated ladies should nurture.

Dressing classy and decent is totally possible regardless of your size and age!

So here are some little tricks and tips to dress better even if you are over 40 and overweight!

Enjoy!

1. UTILISE V SHAPE TOPS TO CREATE ELONGATING SLIMMING EFFECT

Ladies, throw away your round-neck T-shirt and make use of the magic V shape!

As a lady with chubby cheeks myself, I rarely wear a round-neck T-shirt.

Despite the fact that the V-neck top is more sophisticated and makes me look more put together, it works wonders to lengthen our neckline visually.

Also, this makes our face looks less chubby as V shape lining can balance out the round curves of our face.

While some of you may know about the V shape of clothing already, what about shoes?

Instead of round-toe shoes, always pick the V shape pointed shoes.

In our 40s and 50s, let’s be real, we are getting tired of wearing heels anymore.

Well, a pair of pointed flats can visually make your legs appear longer without putting any pressure on them!

Another tip:

If you want to wear a round neck, make sure you wear outerwear with a big V-neck to balance things out.

This combo just works wonders: Modern, feminine, and ultra-forgiving.

The same rules go with accessories.

Instead of wearing the chunky necklace that cuts your neckline, always look for the Y-shape necklace to elongate your neckline and the upper body figure overall.

This is extremely elegant and you can match it with both formal and casual clothing!

My favorite weekend look is wearing a plain V-neck shirt with a rose gold Y-necklace on top, looks chic and classy!

2. INCORPORATE A BOAT NECKLINE FOR A CLASSY LOOK

The boat neckline top is a timeless piece that every woman should have!

If you are a young curvy girl, an off-shoulder dress is the best choice to appear slimmer almost instantly.

Showing the neckline, the thinnest part of the body draws people’s attention to your neck and chest rather than your figure overall.

However, for the ladies that prefer more of a modest classy style, a boat neckline top is a great choice.

It’s not as revealing as an off-shoulder top but still creates a slimmer illusion effortlessly.

I am truly addicted to any kind of boat neckline top, it’s just a timeless piece even after a decade.

I swear you wear way more than you expected!

3. TRY OTHER DARK COLORS DESPITE BLACK FOR A SLIMMING EFFECT

When you are overweight and you want some outfit styling suggestions, most of the time you will get the same answer “Wear black! “

Well, thank you. I didn’t know that before.

It’s true that wearing black can make us look slimmer, no doubt about that.

However, ladies, are we gonna limit our choice to just black? No! The 40s & 50s are the golden phrases of a woman (like red wine) – you definitely aren’t old enough to wear granny’s outfit!

Army green is such a classy dark color, ladies, try this out!

Despite black, other dark and earth-tone colors can make you look slimmer and elegant as well, try them out!

Other classic colors:

  • Red Velvet
  • Camel
  • Caramel
  • Grey
  • Emerald green

PRO TIP:

Whether you want to wear pastel shades or dark hues, if you go for the monochromatic, you will instantly look slimmer.

REASON BEHIND:

Putting similar shades on your body help unites your frame as a long rectangle, and helps draw eyes upward.

Together with the slimming black tights, this is how you can rock all colors in the most forgiving way!

4. SAY NO TO BIG PRINTINGS & PLATES

How to dress if you're over 40 and overweight

I know floral prints are feminine but beware of the big printings! With complicated and big prints, they enlarge your body and make you appear bigger than your original size.

What’s more, without proper styling, big printings can easily go cheesy.

Instead, patterns like straight stripes or a top with lowkey shadow lace are a great choice!

Added to this, try your best to avoid pleated dresses.

This can make your waist looks thicker easily.

5. PLAY WITH TEXTURE THAT LEVELS UP YOUR WHOLE LOOK

Instead of playing with the printings of the clothes, it’s time to level up and pay attention to the texture and materials of the clothes.

1. COTTON

Cotton is definitely a great choice as it’s comfy. However, the problem with cotton is: We wear this too often.

Plus, when it comes to cotton, always choose high-quality thick cotton, otherwise, some of the shirts may be a bit see-through and that’s not elegant at all.

2. CHIFFON

Chiffon is a flattering material but if you are a plus-size lady, this may not be the best choice.

A chiffon top will naturally make your upper body appear more voluminous and we should avoid that.

3. TWEED

Tweed is a perfect choice for ladies in their 40s! It’s a classy, thick fabric that makes your outfit look more polished and elegant.

The best thing about tweed is the fabric is thick enough to hide your lower belly!

Every time when I wear the waisted tweed pencil dress, I feel like I have shed a good few pounds!

4. CASHMERE

During winter, you don’t want to wear a bulky coat to make your body figure looks bigger so cashmere is a great fabric to try.

Not only it’s warm enough for wintertime, but it also creates a softer and more feminine look effortlessly!

5. SILK & SATIN for 40s & 50s

If you are in your 20s, textures like silk and satin may not fit you that well.

But if you are in your 40s, these textures are so flattering!

Silk and satin are really smooth and it hugs our body curves naturally without looking suffocated by the outfits.

Silk is so versatile, from formal silk straight shirts to feminine lace V-neck long dresses, you can always find a way to incorporate silk clothes into your wardrobe!

6. SHOW YOUR SILHOUETTE WITH STYLING TRICKS

I used to think hiding my body with a long-sleeve loose dress will make me look slimmer.

Well, it’s not really doing me any favors but makes me look even bulkier!

Instead, showing our silhouette can help us create an hourglass figure (even if we don’t have one! ) and makes us look slimmer. Here are some of the tricks:

  • Always wear high waists clothes to show the waist and hide your lower belly seamlessly (High waist jumpsuit and jeans)
  • Belt the long dress to create an illusion of a higher waist
  • Always tuck your shirts into high waist skirt and trousers (Not only does this look slimmer but also taller)
  • Wear trousers that show ankles, this can elongate your legs

Reminder:

While you should always use your belt, always look for a thin belt instead of the thick one.

Otherwise, it looks like you are being cut into two parts, which is not flattering at all!

7. ALWAYS WEAR FITTED CLOTHES TO LOOK PUT TOGETHER

I know ladies, this tip can’t be more obvious.

However, I feel the urge to mention this point again as many women (including me) are still tempted to buy clothes in the wrong size.

If you are in size L, ladies, pick size L instead of size M! Don’t give the excuses like “It’s alright, I can shed a few pounds around my belly in one week or two” and buy the wrong sizes anymore.

After countless painful experiences, I realize with the wrong size dress, my back fat, and rolls become even more obvious and create the opposite effect.

For example, if you are seeing these “simile lines” on jeans across the front crotch area, high chance you have to SIZE UP.

So my genuine advice is, always wear fitted clothes, you will look more confident and flattering in the right size!

This is so random… BUT

hey ladies, why not quickly do an affirmation and feel instantly better?

This new year, I’m trying not only to share fashion tips but come up with ways to instill body positivity in all women who are reading my articles – aka YOU!

Instead of just reading it, say it loud or murmur the quotes (if you are in public) to maximize the effect.

Ready? Here we go.

I love my body. She is my forever home and sanctuary.

Sassy isn’t a shape, it’s an attitude.

Work out because I love my body – not because I hate it.

I can love myself and change my body at the same time. No guilt about that.

It is completely normal to have tummy rolls. I come to realize that social media isn’t showing the reality… at all.

My happiest moments in life had nothing to do with the way my body looked.

I don’t have to be pretty like her, I can be pretty like …ME.

I AM perfect imperfection.

What are your thoughts on that? I hope that makes you feel better (as you deserved).

Please help me pass the body positivity message in your community. #womenhelpwomen

8. Wear a bag that is proportionally FIT

This tip is SO UNDERRATED.

Here’s the tough love: We all love mini bags ( just cuteness overload!). But if you are in the bigger frame and wear a mini bag, it just makes you look bigger visually.

That’s just by comparison sis.

So ladies, rock the right size of bag to look the most sophisticated and put together.

Another tip:

Learn from this gorgeous lady above and match your top and shoes in similar shades.

That way, you can boost the elongating effect from head to toe.

And guess what, limit the colors of the outfit to no more than 3 just to minimize the chance of looking all over the place.
